"Which insulates better, curtains or blinds?" is a fair question with a frustrating first answer: it depends more on how the covering traps air and seals the window edges than on whether you call it a curtain or a blind. A thin blind and a thin curtain both do little; a honeycomb shade and a heavy lined drape both do a lot. So the useful comparison is not curtains-versus-blinds in the abstract but the best insulating version of each, and why. Here is what actually drives window insulation, how the leading options stack up, and where layering beats choosing.

First, how a window covering insulates at all

A window is a hole in your insulated wall, and most of its heat loss and gain happens at the glass. A covering slows that transfer three ways: by trapping still air between the room and the glass (still air is a good insulator), by adding a physical barrier of mass, and by sealing the edges so warm and cold air cannot circulate around it. That last one is underrated — a covering that seals the top, sides, and bottom keeps a pocket of still air against the glass, while one with open edges lets convection wash that benefit away. The best blind for insulation: cellular

Among blinds and shades, the cellular (honeycomb) shade is the clear insulation leader, and it is not close. Its cells trap a layer of still air between the room and the glass — the covering's whole structure is built around the number-one insulation lever. By contrast, a roller or roman is a single fabric layer with modest effect, and a wood or faux-wood blind is among the weakest insulators because air leaks freely between the tilted slats. The best curtain for insulation: heavy, lined, wide, and long

Among curtains, the insulator is a heavy thermal or blackout-lined drape — but only when it is hung to seal. Mass helps, yet a thermal curtain hung narrow and short, with gaps at the sides and a foot of open air below the sill, leaks most of its benefit through those edges. Hung correctly — wider than the window, from above the frame to the floor, ideally with the sides close to the wall — a lined drape adds real mass and, crucially, seals the edges, which is where curtains earn their insulation. The lesson is that a curtain's insulation is as much about installation as fabric: seal the edges or lose the effect.

Head to head: which wins?

At the material level, a good cellular shade and a heavy lined floor-to-ceiling drape are roughly in the same league, and both clearly beat rollers, romans, wood blinds, and sheers. The tiebreakers are practical:

  • Sealing. A cellular shade seals reasonably well on an inside mount but leaks a little at the side gaps; an outside-mount cellular seals better. A properly hung wide, long drape seals the edges well by covering them. Whichever seals more edges at your window wins the real-world contest.
  • Consistency. A cellular shade delivers its insulation every time you lower it, effortlessly. A curtain only insulates when you actually draw it fully closed and it is hung to seal — more dependent on habit and installation.
  • Look and space. A cellular is compact and unobtrusive; a heavy drape is a soft, warm decor element that needs wall space to stack. That is a style choice as much as an energy one.

The honest caveat on the numbers

A responsible word on expectations: window coverings reduce heat loss and gain, but they are not a substitute for the window itself. A covering slows transfer at a single-pane or drafty window meaningfully, but published energy figures vary widely by product, climate, installation, and how consistently you use the covering, so treat any single R-value or percentage claim as a rough guide, not a guarantee. The reliable statement is directional and safe: cellular shades and well-hung heavy drapery reduce heat transfer more than thin single-layer coverings, and sealing the edges matters as much as the material. Where the window is a serious thermal weak point, the covering helps, but the window and weatherstripping do the heavy lifting.

Why the best answer is often both

The two are not rivals so much as layers. The strongest window-insulation setup a covering can provide is a cellular shade against the glass — trapping air right at the source — with a heavy lined drape over it to add mass and seal the edges the shade leaves open.
