Measuring for Sliding Doors and Wide Windows

Wide openings break the assumptions behind a normal blind order. A single shade can only get so wide before it sags; a sliding door needs clearance for its handle and room for the stack to sit out of the way; and one window might really be a run that wants two or three shades on a shared headrail. Sliding doors and wide windows are where measuring stops being a formality and starts being a design decision. Here is how to get the numbers — and the product — right.

Start with the product, because width has limits

Every blind has a maximum manufacturable width, and it varies a lot by product. Push a single roller or cellular shade too wide and one of two things happens: the published width limit stops you outright, or the shade technically builds but the bottom rail visibly deflects (bows) and the fabric can telescope. For very wide spans you generally have three product answers:

  • Vertical blinds or panel track. Purpose-built for wide openings and sliding doors: vanes or fabric panels that draw to one side and stack out of the way. Panel track in particular suits a big modern slider.
  • Multiple shades on one headrail (a two-on-one). Several shades share a continuous headrail so the run looks unified but no single shade is over-wide. You get a small gap between shades where they meet.
  • Split the opening into separate shades. Two or three independent shades, measured and mounted individually, each well within its width limit.

Sliding-door specifics: stack-back and handle clearance

Two measurements matter on a sliding door that do not on a normal window.

Stack-back is the space the covering occupies when fully open. Verticals and panel tracks pull to one side and pile up there; if you want the glass mostly clear, you need wall beside the door for the stack to land, and you measure and mount wide enough that the open stack sits off the glass. Decide which way it should draw — away from the door's opening side, usually — and confirm there is wall to receive it.

Handle clearance. A sliding-door handle protrudes, and an inside or close mount can foul on it. Measure the handle's projection and either mount the covering far enough forward to clear it or choose an outside mount above the door. This is a depth problem in disguise — the same logic as minimum mount depth by product, applied to a door handle.

Most sliding-door coverings are outside mounted above the door for exactly these reasons: it clears the handle, gives room for the stack, and covers the whole assembly. Plan the brackets 2 to 3 inches above the opening and wide enough past each side to cover the frame and park the stack.

Wide windows: sag, center supports, and squareness

For a wide window (not a door), the enemies are sag and out-of-square framing.

  • Deflection. A wide horizontal blind or a wide roller can bow in the middle under its own weight. Sellers publish width limits partly for this reason; stay within them, and for the widest openings prefer a product rated for the span or split into two.
  • Center support brackets. Wide blinds and shades usually require one or more intermediate support brackets along the headrail. These need something solid to anchor to — ideally a stud or the window's top frame — so check what is above the center of your opening before ordering.
  • Squareness over a long run. A long opening is more likely to be out of square end to end. Measure the width at the top, middle, and bottom as always, and the height at several points across the run, not just the two ends. For an inside mount use the narrowest width; if the opening is badly out of square over its length, an outside mount hides it far better.

Worked example: an 84-inch sliding door

You have a patio slider with an 84-inch-wide opening and a handle that projects about 1.5 inches. You choose a panel track, outside mounted above the door.

  • Width: you want the open panels to stack off the glass, so you extend the track past the latch side by roughly a foot and past the other side enough to cover the frame — say a 96-inch track over the 84-inch opening. (Confirm the seller's overlap and stack-back guidance; these numbers are theirs to set.)
  • Height: mount 3 inches above the door and measure down to just above the floor track, leaving a small gap so panels clear the floor.
  • Handle: the outside-above mount clears the 1.5-inch handle projection automatically.

For a wide window instead — say a 72-inch opening taking a single cellular — you would confirm the product's width limit covers 72 inches, plan for the center support bracket the seller specifies, and measure width at three heights, ordering the narrowest for an inside mount. Two details that decide the finished look

On a wide covering, two small choices shape how professional the result looks. First, draw direction: a one-way draw stacks the whole covering to a single side (best when you have wall on one side and want the glass clear), while a split or center-open draw parts in the middle (best for a symmetric look or a centered door handle). Decide which suits your traffic flow and where you want the stack to land. Second, on a two-on-one or split-shade solution there is always a small light gap where the shades meet — usually a fraction of an inch, and unavoidable on a shared headrail. So if a room must be truly dark, a single outside-mounted covering that spans the whole opening beats a split every time. Settling both before you order heads off the two most common surprises on wide installs.

Before you order a wide covering

Wide orders are the most expensive to get wrong because the pieces are large and, like all custom blinds, generally non-returnable — confirm the remake policy first. Verify the maximum width, the center-support requirement, and the stack-back and handle clearance against the seller's own specs, and run the opening through the Measure & Mount Fit Checker to pin the mount and depth.
