There are two ways to end up with a shade that moves on its own: bolt a motor onto blinds you already own, or buy shades with the motor built in from the factory. Both are legitimate, and the right choice depends less on which is "better" and more on what you are starting from — bare windows, or good blinds you would rather not replace. What each approach means

Retrofit motorization adds a motor to an existing manual shade or blind. The forms vary: a device that turns the bead chain on a roller or cellular shade, a motorized wand that tilts existing blind slats, or a replacement roller tube with a motor inside that reuses your existing fabric. The common thread is that you keep most of what is on the window and add movement to it.

Cost: it depends on where you start

If your windows are bare, built-in is almost always the better value. Retrofit is inherently a two-part system, and two-part systems have more seams. A chain-driver has to be sized and tensioned to your specific shade; a retrofit tube has to match your fabric's weight; app support may come from the motor's maker rather than the shade's. Appearance

Built-in motorized shades hide the mechanism — the motor is inside the headrail, and from the room you see a clean shade with no visible hardware. Retrofit devices are often visible to some degree: a chain-driver box sits at the top of the shade near the chain, and a motorized wand is a fatter wand. None of it is ugly, but if a completely clean look matters, built-in is the tidier result.   • A single accessible window you want to try: either, but a simple retrofit chain-driver is a low-commitment way to test whether you even like motorization before committing a whole house.

What to check before buying a retrofit kit

Retrofit's extra variables are manageable if you check them before ordering. Confirm the kit matches your shade's mechanism — a chain-driver needs the right bead-chain size, a replacement tube needs to match your fabric's width and weight, and a tilt motor needs to fit your blind's wand. Finally, weigh noise and speed, since some retrofit motors run louder or slower than an integrated one.
